Wiktionary defines a “Flash in the Pan” as “a transient occurrence with no long-term effect”. This may be the case with trying to get the latest Flash player working on a G5 Mac under Tiger, but it is still well worth the effort, at least for now. If you are still on a G5 Mac, the lack of current Flash support is annoying, to say the least. There are more than a few web sites these days that simply require at least Flash 11.1, and many that require Flash 11.5. Flash 11.8 is the latest offer from Adobe at the time of this writing. What are we to do however, when the last Flash plugin released for the PPC was 10.1?
Happily, there is a solution. At http://scriptogr.am/nordkril/post/adobe-flash-11.5-for-powerpc, you can get an updated version of the last PPC Flash Player, hacked to present itself to the browser as version 11.5. I have loaded this onto my PowerMac G5 2.3 GHz, and it works like a champ. So far, even though plenty of sites say that they NEED at least 11.5, good ‘ol 10.1, hacked to say that it is 11.5, is delivering the goods.
So, it may be just a short term stay of execution for Flash on PPC, but for now it works well and I would recommend it. Flash Away!
